Ivey Ranch Park Annual Report and Financial Information

The Ivey Ranch Park Association is dedicated to encourage the interaction of children with, and without, special needs, of all ages, by providing educational and recreational activities. Since 1981 we have served children and adults with special needs but will not exclude the able-bodied, since integration, inclusion and interaction are important components of our program. Serving over 200 individuals a month, our essential goals are:

Community integration
Community participation
Personal choice
Self-respect and respect for others
Competence and self reliance

On site, a 12-acre park owned by the City of Oceanside, facilities include a childcare and development center, an equestrian park and therapeutic riding program, and a community garden. There is also a memorial tree program that has over 150 trees throughout the property and a public playground for surrounding community members and their families to enjoy.

Operating from the original Ivey family ranch house, children between the ages of 18 months and 22 years of age participate in state licensed programs for toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children. Currently over 2/3 of our children here at Ivey Ranch Child Development Center have moderate to severe disabilities which include behavioral disorders, genetic disorders, and disabilities caused by accident or trauma.

Because of the diverse population of children within multiple educational and recreational programs, Ivey Ranch has been a “Service Learning Campus” for surrounding colleges (Mira Costa Jr. College, Palomar, and California State University, San Marcos) for over 15 years. Students from the Health, Sociology, Psychology, Child Development and Nursing programs are provided over 300 hours of “Service Learning” practicum in an integrated setting. Students are also able to participate in our in-home respite program that provides services for children that are medically fragile or are unable to attend a group setting. There are seven Respite Workers that provide over 250 hours each month of respite services to the parents of children with special needs.

During the summer, Ivey Ranch Park Association hosts an on-site day camp as well as an off-site aquatics program. The adapted aquatics program is operated at the Brook Street pool from June through August for children with special needs and their families. This program operates at full capacity servicing over 30 families. Day camp provided riding instruction, ground training with horses, and humane education with animals for 277 children last summer. Five Instructors and thirteen Interns worked with children from the Mottino YMCA, Campfire USA, Special Camp for Special Kids, as well as from the surrounding community to offer a ranch-based experience integrating children with and without special needs.

The equestrian program, which was started in 2003, now provides service to over 500 children and adults annually. This program has a therapeutic component operated by NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) certified instructors. There are currently over 135 active volunteers providing more than 326 hours each month of service to this program. There are four instructors, fourteen horses, and lessons are conducted six days of every week with two-week breaks between each of the six sessions.

The Association relies on donations from the community to sustain the many different programs available to area families. Volunteers donate about $150,000 worth of services, including childcare, therapy assistance, and ranch maintenance every year. Ivey Ranch is a “Team Building” volunteer site for Volunteer San Diego where large corporations such as Qualcomm, Wells Fargo, the IRS, AT&T and Callaway Golf come for annual community service days. The Association is also broadly supported by local service organizations including Kiwanis, Rotary, Civitan, Soroptimist, Optimist, Elks and Lions.
